Culinary Tourism near Barcelona

Forty kilometres far from Barcelona and Tarragona, there is a Culinary Tourism Proposal, organized by the Comarcas of Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and El Garraf and the cities of Vilafranca del Penedès, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Sitges, El Vendrell and Calafell.

This region offers around the Xató recipe varied thematic trips around the wine-tourism, the sea and the beaches, natural spaces, artistic and architectural patrimony and some ancient traditions, just 30 minutes far from Barcelona by car, bus or train.

We are waiting for you in the Xato Area. Come to taste this singular recipe and its delicious sauce and discover all we can offer.

The ambassador of Xató Route 2011-2012 is Joan Roca, chef of the Celler de Can Roca Restaurant.

Wine tourism and xató
The greater part of wine and cava production is concentrated in this region and grouped under D.O. Penedès y D.O. Cava . One can stroll among the expanse of vineyards or visit some of the zone´s cellars and taste their products.

Xató and the sea
Sharp cliffs which drop into the sea forming small coves and large beaches with fine sand, calm and shallow waters, alternating with maritime ports are some of the indisputable attractions of our coast. The Xató route encompasses 7 coastal municipals from Sitges to Coma-ruga, covering the Garraf coast and part of the Costa Dorada. In total there are over 23 kms of beaches.

Xató and Natural Spaces
In the Xató area there are three great natural parks with different landscapes, species and characteristics: The Garraf Natural Park with two cliffs, both plunging into the sea, fissures and caves:The Foix Natural Park with much bird life ,close to the Foix reservoir and the Olèrdola Natural Park ,a high viewpoint with scrubland, palmitos and shrubs.

Xató and the artistic and cultural patrimony
Those who appreciate art and architecture will find buildings of all periods, from prehistoric settlements to testimonies of modernism and that of immigrant populations (indianos) not to forget mediaeval ,gothic and romantic . Furthermore, the region has been a testimony to the life of well-known artists such as : Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquim Mir, Pau Casals, Charlie Rivel, Carlos Barral,...

During the entire year, in the different villages which form part of the Route there is a complete program of musical festivals and concerts open to all the public .

Xató and traditions
Festivals and traditions are the basis of the intangible heritage of the Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and the Garraf regions. A legacy that has been passed down unaltered throughout the years to the present day and can be enjoyed all year round.
