Gastronomy

Sea, vineyards and olive trees. Have you ever heard of a palfuriana salad or rape al pla de mar”? Can you imagine how nice it must be to make an arroç de vinya with all sorts of vegetables and meats? Do you know what the fruit of the carob tree is like? And what about resolis? Have you even any idea what it is? Well, all these dishes are part of the cuisine of El Vendrell: a cuisine that draws from the sea but also has its roots in dry land and makes use of its products. A cuisine that has become solidly established over generations in an exceptional setting in the shape of a triangle formed by the three consecrated elements: the sea, the vineyards and the olive groves.

El Vendrell is where cooking and culture come together. The art of music possesses an ancient heritage. Listening to a concert with a fine melody first and then enjoying some good cooking accompanied by wine from the local vineyards is a soothing balsam for the senses. Art and cooking, sea and fire, oil and wine.

Xatonada Popular

Xató is made with the curly endive known as escarole, salt cod, tuna fish, anchovies and olives with a dressing of romesco sauce. The origins of xató can be traced back to about the late 18th century, although it did not make its appearance in El Vendrell until 1906. The Xatonada Popular and the Xató Master Chefs Competition were held for the first time in El Vendrell, in the Rambla, in 1987. In 1988 a campaign entitled “Aprèn a fer Xató” (Learn how to make xató) was launched aimed at anyone interested in learning how to make this dish which has such deep roots in our town.

The slogan "El Vendrell, Bressol del Xató" (El Vendrell, Birthplace of Xató) helped to extend the previous campaign to the schools in the town with a view to getting children to start making and appreciating this dish, which is so typical of our town, from an early age.

Every February, the Rambla is the scene of the Xatonada Popular, a food festival in which whoever wants to can take part in the Xató Master Chefs Competition and young children too have the chance to show off their culinary skills.
