Ambassador of the 2018-2019 Xató Route
Josep M. Albet i Noya is renowned for his tireless work, for promoting wine culture and for his commitment to the region of the Gran Penedès. A staunch defender for making the Penedès DO a designation that is recognised for the quality and uniqueness of its wines, in 1978 he was the first viticulturist to produce organic wines in Catalonia and Spain. A member of the Farmers’ Union, he is a lover of the land who is well aware of the farming business, the farmer’s work and the importance it has on the end result of the wines.
In 1984 he created the company Albet i Noya with his brother Toni and his mother Núria. Today, ALBET I NOYA owns 80 hectares of vineyards in the Penedès DO within the sub-region of Muntanyes de l’Ordal, where it buys grapes from a dozen neighbouring winegrowers and produces one million bottles, 80% of which it exports to 29 countries. They are all organic wines (6,000 natural wines with no sulphites).
His experience in organic and biodynamic winemaking led him in 1996 to found the winery “OSOTI Viñedos Ecológicos”,with the first RIOJA DOC organic wine brand,in Andosilla (Rioja Baja) and in 1997 he founded Mas Igneus,the first PRIORAT DOQ organic winery, in Poboleda, Tarragona. In 2004 he founded AUZOLAN VITICULTORES,a winery producing organic wines with NAVARRA DO, in Olite, Navarra.
His passion for organic wines led him in 1997 to create ANPI WINES, the first importer and distributor in Catalonia and Spain, specializing in organic wines and in 2015, was the first winegrower of the Penedès to put biodynamic viticulture into practice. Josep M. Albet i Noya has held various relevant positions throughout his career: board member of the CCPAE (Catalan Council of Organic Farming); Catalunya DO member for the “Unió de Pagesos” (Farmers’ Union), representing private winegrowers; President of the Organic Wine Producers Group of the Catalan Wine Association; teacher of Organic Winemaking and Marketing courses at several schools and universities in Tenerife (University of La Laguna), Lanzarote, Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida, Mallorca, La Rioja, Jaén, Navarra, Valencia and Huesca. This year, the Xató Route has the honour of having him as Ambassador, as President of the Regulating Council of the Penedès Designation of Origin.
